Referee Development

Nobody grows into a good referee alone. Leads on site, mentors in the moment, and coaching that opens the next level.

Why it matters

Support on the field, not just a schedule.

Most officials quit in their first two seasons — almost always because a match got away from them and nobody was there afterward. That's the problem this programme exists to solve.

We put experienced people on site and alongside developing referees: someone to run the venue, someone to watch and encourage, and someone to write the formal review when a referee is ready to move up. Clubs and tournaments can request any of the three.

Three roles

Lead, mentor, coach.

Different jobs with different outputs. Here's who does what — and when to ask for each.

On-site leadership

Referee Lead

A senior official assigned to a venue or event to run the referee side of the day — check-ins, crew adjustments, weather calls, and the person a young referee looks for when something goes wrong.

  • Manages crews across fields at a single site
  • Handles substitutions, late arrivals, and re-assignments
  • First point of contact for coaches and site directors
  • Files a wrap-up on how the day ran

Support in the moment

Mentor

A mentor is there for the referee, not the match. They watch a newer official work, step in at halftime with one or two things to focus on, and stay after for a calm conversation about what happened.

  • Pre-match walkthrough and expectations
  • Halftime and post-match feedback in plain language
  • Confidence, positioning, and match management
  • Follow-up on the next assignment

New & developing referees

Structured development

Coach / Assessment

A referee coach delivers a written, structured review against USSF criteria — the path referees take when they want to move up a level or work higher competitions.

  • Formal observation against USSF criteria
  • Written report with strengths and priorities
  • Upgrade and higher-level pathway guidance
  • Repeat observations to track progress

Request support

For clubs, leagues & referees

Ask for a referee lead at your venue, a mentor for a developing official, or a formal assessment. Tell us the details and we'll match the right person to it.

Become a lead

Experienced? Give it back.

If you've been around the game and want to lead crews, mentor newer officials, or work toward becoming a referee coach, this is the way in. Paid roles on selected events.

Not sure which one you need?

Send a note and we'll tell you straight — sometimes the answer is a five-minute phone call, not a programme.
